Responsibilities
As Support Technician, performs sanitation (60% of duties), sterilization and maintenance of laboratory animal caging and accessories. Ensures the cleanliness, functionality, and biosecurity of animal housing areas, caging systems, Operates all main equipment within the Support Section including 2 chlorinators, 2 rack washers, 4 sterilizers and bio-decontamination system. Maintains appropriate lab animal supplies, responsible for an appropriate cleaning and sanitation for ABSL2, ABSL3/BSL3. Maintains inventory and availability of laboratory animal supplies, including bedding, feed, enrichment devices, personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitation materials, and husbandry-related consumables. Assists with receiving, storing, and distributing supplies to support daily animal facility operations. Provides basic husbandry care to maintain highest quality of the WRAIR-AFRIMS laboratory animal colonies and provides support to animal activities of the Department. Assists veterinarians or research investigators in animal experiment for research activities.
Qualifications
1. High school diploma or high vocational school or bachelor’s degree in agricultural science or equivalent.
2. Enthusiasm for biomedical research in laboratory animals, and hard-working for supporting all research and any relevant.
3. Experience in laboratory animal care, sanitation, facility operations, or related work is desirable.
4. Ability to operate or learn to operate cage washers, autoclaves, and other animal facility
equipment.
5. Ability to follow standard operating procedures, biosafety requirements, and animal welfare
guidelines. Good communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
6. Position requires employee to wear protective clothing/gear.
7. Level II (Limited Knowledge) of English skills, able to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance and communicate during simple and routine tasks. You can submit a copy of valid TOEIC score (Listening and Reading Section) of at least 400, or pass the English Placement Test (EPT) that is conducted by AFRIMS.
8. Practice compassionate animal care, have excellent communication skills with colleagues, and dedicate to practicing the highest quality of services.
9. Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and after-hours as required to support animal care operations. Able to perform animal husbandry and animal cages and rooms sanitation.
10. Have basic facility repairing or mechanical skill such as welding, electricity, plumbing, painting, carpentry or facility mechanical preventive maintenance, etc.
11. Physically capable of lifting and moving supplies and equipment weighing up to 25 kg, pushing carts, standing for extended periods, and performing routine cleaning and sanitation tasks.
12. Have basic Microsoft office such as Microsoft outlook, and Microsoft excel.
