•     Process design from literature. Read and critically evaluate primary literature and supporting data (extraction protocols, spectroscopic characterization, X-ray and chromatographic data) and translate validated methods into working bench and pilot-scale SOPs.

•     Extraction & purification. Design and run extraction workflows for plant alkaloids and related natural products — solvent selection, solid–liquid extraction, acid–base partitioning, and comparative process optimization.

•     Chromatography & isolation. Develop and execute flash and preparative chromatography (normal- and reversed-phase), crystallization, and other purification strategies to isolate target compounds and their close structural relatives at high purity.

•     Synthetic transformations. Carry out downstream synthetic steps on isolated natural products — hydrolysis, decarboxylation, and related small-molecule transformations — evaluating and adapting reaction conditions (temperature, catalyst/scavenger systems, reaction time) against literature precedent.

•     Analytical method development. Build and validate HPLC-DAD/LC-MS methods for reaction monitoring, purity assessment, and quantitation against reference standards; coordinate outsourced NMR/X-ray work where needed.

•     Scale-up & facility input. Advise on lab and pilot-scale infrastructure requirements — fume hood and ventilation specification, solvent handling, reaction vessel selection, material compatibility — as processes move from gram to multi-hundred-gram scale.

•     Safety & compliance judgment. Apply sound process-safety reasoning to solvent-intensive and pressurized reactions, and flag regulatory or import considerations relevant to specific plant materials and their derived compounds.
Direct reporting to the CEO. Communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations clearly and independently — in written summaries and in person — to a non-technical executive audience.

•     Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a closely related field, with a demonstrated specialization in natural products.

•     5+ years of hands-on experience in natural product chemistry — plant extraction, isolation, purification, and/or semi-synthetic modification of isolated compounds. Direct experience with alkaloid-bearing plant material is a strong advantage.

•     Practical, bench-level fluency with flash/preparative chromatography, crystallization, liquid–liquid extraction, and standard organic workup.

•     Working knowledge of HPLC-DAD and/or LC-MS for reaction monitoring and purity/quantitation work; comfortable interpreting NMR data even if you don't run the instrument yourself.

•     Demonstrated ability to read a primary research paper — including its supporting information — and reproduce or adapt its methodology independently.

•     Sound, conservative judgment around solvent-intensive and pressurized chemistry, including an instinct for when a process needs better containment, ventilation, or engineering controls before it needs more scale.

•     Fluent, confident professional English, spoken and written — you will represent the company's technical position directly in meetings with international partners and collaborators.

•     Experience specifically with indole alkaloids, monoterpenoid indole alkaloids, or related nitrogen-heterocycle natural products.

•     Prior work in a start-up or small-team environment where you owned a technical program end-to-end.

•     Familiarity with botanical raw material sourcing, identity verification, and quality assessment.

•     Exposure to regulatory considerations for controlled or novel plant-derived compounds.
