Staff Gemologist (Colored Stones)

Key Responsibilities
- Become properly trained to operate standard and advanced gemological instrumentation and recognize the quality of data obtained.
- Become familiar with GIA’s Identification testing protocols.
- Learn to accurately identify gem characteristics under the supervision of more senior staff or management.
- Learn to accurately collect data from all types of gems in accordance with GIA protocols.
- Participate in special projects, data collection, instrument testing and document filing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Analytical Chemistry, Solid State Physics, or one of the Earth Sciences and some statistical abilities.
- Able to operate standard and advanced gemological instruments (Refractometer, handheld spectroscope, polariscope, microscope, fluorescence, etc.) and advanced instruments (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), Ultraviolet–visible near infrared spectroscopy (UV-Vis-NIR)) in accordance with protocol.
- Ability to get along with a diverse group of individuals.
- Able to communicate professionally (communicate respectfully, listen, articulate/explain issues, use of professional tone, know when and how to communicate effectively with different types of communication tools); deals with colleagues effectively and professionally under pressure.
- Ability to give as well as accept and learn from constructive criticism.
- Accurate, detail-minded and good concentration skills.
- Flexible attitude and approach to work as a team.
- Desire to continually learn new information.
- Possess basic computer skills.
- Language Skills-Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Reasoning Ability- able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Knows or learns when to ask questions or seek help / assistance.
Education / Training / Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Geology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Chemistry or related fields. Graduate Gemologist and/or FGA diploma required to move to next level.
