Responsibilities

1 Material & Technology Evaluation:

Evaluate new materials and technologies against product requirements. Compare candidate solutions, assess supplier technical data and qualification evidence, and identify performance risks with Stream Owners and relevant specialists.

2 Product Feasibility & Engineering Assessment:

Assess assigned product concepts, material combinations and technical risks. Support Stream Owners and Industrial & Process in early DFM and tooling reviews; provide evidence on product performance and technical limitations.

3 Material & Product Specifications:

Develop or support measurable material and product requirements, test criteria and technical recommendations with Stream Owners and specialists. Industrial & Process retains ownership of production process specifications and controls. Designated specialists retain ownership of material specifications and specialist process parameters within their assigned scope.

4 Research Trials & DOE:

Plan assigned experiments to investigate material behavior, product performance or new technologies. Define objectives, variables, controls and criteria; analyze findings. Agree manufacturing trial conditions and responsibilities with Industrial & Process and relevant specialists before trials; permanent changes require approved change control.

5 Material & Product Validation:

Develop and execute assigned material, component and product-performance validation plans. Use applicable customer requirements and approved standards/methods. Propose internal methods and criteria for approval before use; retain mandatory requirements. Record sample identity, test conditions, results and conclusions; recommend acceptance based on evidence.

6 Technical Investigation & Problem Solving:

Lead assigned investigations into material, design or product-performance mechanisms. Verify root causes and proposed solutions with evidence. Work with Process and specialists on shared issues; routine manufacturing-process troubleshooting remains with Industrial & Process.

7 Prototype & Development Support:

Support Stream Owners in defining prototype evaluation requirements and interpreting performance results. Recommend technical improvements while Stream Owners retain ownership of product design, development details and sample preparation.

8 Technical Transfer & Industrialization Support:

Transfer validated material/product requirements, test evidence, limitations and unresolved risks to Industrial & Process. Support pilot builds and ramp-up on assigned product issues; Industrial & Process leads process validation and manufacturing readiness.

9 Engineering Change Technical Support:

Provide material/product impact assessments and validation evidence for ECR/ECN with relevant owners. Industrial & Process reviews manufacturing impacts; NPI coordinates the workflow. Submit recommendations through established approval procedures.

10 Technical Knowledge & Records:

Maintain traceable research, qualification, trial and validation records. Capture lessons and reusable material/product evaluation methods with specialists; production WI and process-control documents remain with Industrial & Process.

Authority:

Propose evaluation methods, trials, validation plans, material/product criteria and technical acceptance or rejection within assigned scope. Escalate unresolved risks. Final product release, production changes, ECR/ECN and BOM/master-data release require designated approval; project priorities are decided by the Head.

R&D reports directly to the Head, in parallel with NPI. Stream Owners and specialists retain product, material and specialist-parameter ownership in their assigned scope. Industrial & Process owns process design, process windows, production WI, controls and validation; IE performs standard-time, capacity, layout and manpower analysis under Industrial & Process governance. NPI owns coordination, change workflow and data/release tracking. The Head assigns R&D work packages and one lead with agreed deliverables for each shared investigation; DOE and RCA may be used by either function.
